Say what you want about our diminutive friend from the Isle of Man, but he looks like he may have stayed away from the pies on the run up to Le Tour. Should be fun to watch...
Garmin picked up a new sponsor. Looks like they'll now be called, "Team Garmin p/b Giro Helmets' Special Ed Department"
Is it bad that I want to root for Wiggo?
And here's some Kate for your weekend. Enjoy...
It was hot last night. The group was big last night. The beginning of the ride was pretty brilliant.
Cayce Police escort out to 12th St. He blocked traffic on 2 separate occasions. Nice to have a LEO who also rides bikes in the bunch!
Once out to Old Wire, shit went sideways. People went straight, people turned, cars got in the mix, I got shuffled (and run off the road). I was behind 4 cars, in a grupetto that I knew wasn't going to help on the climb, or the descent, so I sat up and watched the bunch ride away.
Most of my ride last night was a solo spin through Lexington County. No worries...it was still a bike ride!
Good to see the faces of some old friends last night. Still no National Champion though...one ponders...
Once #3 goes down for his nap, I need to pull the front of the Ridley apart. It's making some unsettling clunking/crunching noises when bumps pass under the wheels. Hopefully it's something simple, like re-building the headset and greasing everything. If something is broken, I'm gonna be pissed.
The Tour starts tomorrow. I'm tempted to stay home to watch, but seeing as it's gonna be 137 degrees, I'm going out and getting it done. And the fact that NBCSN will re-play it ALL day...I can watch at my leisure.
Time to get the day started...

The roof...the roof...the roof...
Colorado Springs in on FIRE. That's the Air Force Academy's football stadium in the foreground. It may be there today...it may not. 32k folks have been asked to evacuate. I don't care what, or who, you believe in, but when you get a moment, spare a thought for the fine folks in Colorado. We ALL know a few that live out there...
Above Category finished this Monday. So, So hot! Cipo, 11v Campag EPS, SRM, Lightweights...nothing like a $20k bike.
Paging Mr. Edwards, Mr. Edwards, please pick up the green Sidi courtesy phone...
And this was the theme of last night's ride. I went, I rode for a minute, I decided I didn't want to be riding, so I went home. My shoulder hurt like a MFer after getting manipulated by the Surgeon yesterday. In all honesty, I think a few of the manipulations were just him fucking with me. An arm just isn't supposed to be pull in certain directions unless you have been thrown clear of a high speed motor vehicle accident!
He did figure out the cause of my "discomfort". The Clavicle is displaced (knew that), and has moved (did NOT know that). It is rubbing against the acromion (look it up), and causing pain, pinching, swelling, and numbness.
The fix? Temporary fix is a few cortisone shots to reduce the pain and swelling. I'm cool with that. Permanent? Shoulder surgery to surface the clavicle and create a pocket of space in the shoulder joint. I'm also cool with that...for now. Down time SHOULD be 10 days or so, but we all know that the best laid plans of mice and men...blah, blah, blah...
The way my luck runs, there will be rotator cuff, or labrum issues, and I'll be jacked up for 4-6 weeks. I'd really like to go a year without cameras and scalpels being used on my person as well...
Time for a nosh...
Enjoy your humpday, as it will be the last day this week in which El Sol isn't trying to melt you into a puddle!
Namaste!

A lot of nothing...
Boonen won the Belge Champs again. Evidently, on this Monday morning, there's a shortage of cocaine, Italian sports cars, and teenage models...
Yeah, sure, Forstermann has never used any kind of PED....
We all know the song...sing it with me...
Ok, here's a test...which of the t-shirts doesn't belong?
I know the angle of this shot of the Stelvio has been manipulated, but it's still a crazy shot. Here are more to pine over...
And again, I'm re-thinking my stance on the whole fixed-gear-hipster-girl thing. There's a definite "Red Riding Hood" story to be written here...
So as I mentioned a few days ago, I knicked the sidewall of a high dollar Vittoria Open Corsa SC. The knick was all of 3-4mm long, and maybe 1-1.5mm wide...just tiny. Normally, when the sidewall of a tire gets a knick, or a cut, it's garbage. Well, not this time.
As I've already destroyed two of these tires since March, I had some material with which to affect a repair. One of the OC SCs came out of the pile and gladly sacrificed a section of it's baloney-skin thin sidewall.
This small (1cm x 3cm) section was then glued into the inside of the tire with Germany's finest Schlauchreifenkitt. A much smaller (5mm x 1cm) section was then super-glued to the outer sidewall.
Re-install, and air up to 120-ish psi. Not even so much as a sidewall bump.
I rode it around the block. Not a hint of the tell-tale "thump-thump-thump" that sometimes accompanies a booted tire.
Saturday morning, it got it's test. 5 of us rolled out thru the Fort, and into LR. The Vitt got checked at the escape trail, and all was fine.
I stopped thinking about it at that point. No muss, no fuss...
A long, meandering loop rolled under our wheels, including what seemed like a brutally long section of Bluff and Old Bluff. I guess the complete lack of cover, and the heat-midity had something to do with this...
Good ride, good company...
I then came home and did 5 hours of manual labor in the driveway. "No big deal" you say? Ok then, the next time I go to Lowe's and get 6x6x8' lumber, I'll expect help. Those fuckers are heavy (150-ish pounds) and awkward.
Sunday...no ride, as I was playing the part of loving husband and father, which we all know runs completely contrary to my normal M.O. (yes, that was sarcasm!) What'd we do? Not important. Just know it was quality time spent...
Enough for a Monday...

Rides shouldn't cost $75
No, I'm not even talking about races, which are heading that direction. Nor am I talking about cookie rides, which are tipping closer to that number by the ride. Some are already that much, and for what, a few bananas and a pair of socks?
I digress...
Last night was a good ride. Nice big jovial group. We did the longer loop last night, which includes a couple of portions of the Sunday Calhoun County loop. I can say with some credulity that I've ridden both of the climbs in last night's ride on several occasions, but rarely at that speed. It was actually fun.
Everyone...well, most everyone, stayed together until the end, even on the 30mph run in on 302. Once through the airport and onto Platt Springs, things went a bit pear shaped for yours truly.
Running down the hill @ well over 30, I hit a hole, or piece of metal, or something. My rear tire went flat immediately. FUCK! Yet another cut Vittoria Open Corsa SC, and a ripped Michelin latex tube.
The price of this showcase Johnny? Right at $75.
Fortunately, the cut is small, and I think I've devised a way to fix it without endangering myself, or others. I'm gonna try it later. No sense tossing a perfectly good tire for a 5mm x 1mm cut...
A couple of the Harrell's boys stopped with me, and thankfully, Ricky had an empty GU packet. Yep, that's the boot. It's thick mylar, and a tube will NOT blow through it. Try that with a dollar bill...
Appointment for the shoulder is next Tuesday. Can't wait to have a scar like this. JUST. CAN'T. WAIT.
Here's a pic from last Saturday's ride in Charlotte. That's right, I have hot chicks in lycra keeping me out of the wind...and you?
Baller knows no age limits...
Time to get ready and take Junior Mgmt. to the zoo. That should get rid of the stiffness in my legs...
Saturday 0900 from Brennan. Come on out. You may have a good time...
Namaste...

Motivation...I no haz it...
This pretty much sums up my level of motivation to ride last night. As a matter of fact, I was fast asleep on the loveseat yesterday @ 5:15 when #1 woke me and asked if I was going to ride. I went ahead and got dressed and rolled over to the spot. Then I proceeded to roll around for the next 2 hours. Just did not G-A-F...
If they actually made these, Nutella could make a fortune!!!
"Jens is going to keeeeel you..."
Never been a big fan of the townie bike concept. I made the Salsa a townie, rode it twice, and turned it back into a CX bike. This bike, however, may be the game changer. So hot....
Bike shop...Minneapolis...circa 1904. Even then employees stared out the front door, wondering where the customers were. Minneapolis has always been on the cutting edge...
Nothing much else to report. Another big, exciting week in SodaTown...
Work on the house commences this weekend...I think I'll be lazy the rest of the week...

Monday...fun day? Nope...
I have dreams that go a lot like this...
Sometimes, triathletes makes it entirely too easy. I mean, WTF man?
Hey Levi, want a Pro-Tip? If you stop riding bullshit saddles, you won't have to adjust the tilt every ride. Specialized Romin saddles are a gift from the ghost of the Marquis de Sade.
"I'm doing something here. Don't know what exactly, but judging by your reaction, it's definitely something!" 10 months old and pulled himself up last night. Have I mentioned that he doesn't do more than a Marine belly crawl? Why do I have the freakishly strong children? I'm so screwed...
Great ride in NC/SC on Saturday. Good turnout and big fun. We left Waxhaw about 30 minutes late (seemed like being at home), because Chad had a flat on the way over to the meeting spot. South out of Waxhaw and down into SC, across into NC, back into SC, over into NC...you see a pattern here?
Slip took home the polka-dot jersey for KoM, and I won every sprint, except the finish (3rd), to be presented with the green. In my defense, I was coming around when Dr. Scott pushed me to the yellow line. Normally, I'd swing out, but the whole 'cars coming in the opposite direction' thing hindered me a bit.
It was a great 50 mile loop. The roads, terrain, weather, and company could not have been any better.
Post ride, we hung out at this house for the remainder of the day. It is for sale, so if you're interested.... :) Grilled burgers (turkey), dipped feet in the COLD pool, and generally just had some quality laughs. Made the drive up and back completely worthwhile!
Sunday, I woke up with ZERO impetus to ride. Instead, my physical activity consisted of yard work, including running the chainsaw, and hand splitting 1/2 cord of fresh cut hickory.
The shorter list today would be what IS NOT sore on my body.
Oh well, such is life...
Have a good Monday folks!

Sagan is unbeatable right now. How unbeatable? He came around Ben Swift yesterday...ON THE HOODS!

Ideas for next Summer's ManCation are swirling around in my addled little brain right now. Swap out the anemic MicroBus, and sub a Yukon XL, and we may have a winner...
And with all of the monkey crap getting hurled lately concerning Lance and doping, a big thanks goes out to George Hincapie. A hard man, a domestique of the highest order and a really nice guy. It has been our privilege to watch you race for 19 years!
Off to Charlotte in the morning for a nice ride through the NC countryside, and to hang out with some stellar people for the afternoon.
Namaste...

Old stuff...(Lance related)
So the USADA sent off a letter to Lance, as well as a few select others? They say that they have adverse analytical proof that points to EPO use, and/or blood doping. Really?
If this proof DOES exist, why wasn't it presented to the FEDERAL Grand Jury? Hmmmm, Mr. Tygart?
You know why this will never fly, and be but another blip on the radar of Lance and doping accusations?
-If the USADA had hard, fast, positive test results, they'd release them. Tygart would do a big press conference, wave around a bunch of papers, and the vein in his neck would pop out. You think Lance is an ego-maniac? What pushes a person to pursue charges against another that mean nothing? For 10+ years?
-The USADA has no power. They cannot compel ANYONE to speak to them. Sure, they can recommend, and they have ostensibly banned LA from competing in certain events, but in the big picture, it means little, if anything. BTW, Lance has only been banned from UCI/WTC events. He could line up at USAC/USAT events today! The NC crit championships ARE this weekend.... ;)
-The USADA is, in fact, a quasi-Government agency. The were created by the Government, and receive $10 million in funding through grants. $10 million of YOUR tax dollars. Are they chasing MLB/NFL/NHL/UFC/WWE guys with this money as well, or just Lance?
-The Feds have closed their case against LA...forever. He's not going to jail. He's not getting fined.
-The UCI and WADA won't do a thing. Why? Because it's bad for the sport. If they ban Armstrong, or strip his Tour titles, it's a tacit admission that they colluded with not only USPS (and whatever other team LA was on), as well as the vast majority of professional cycling teams of the era in question. Let's face it, the sheer number of guys who later got caught points a lot of fingers in a lot of directions.
-LA has already says he just doesn't care about it anymore. He's said so in a few interviews. He seems to have found relative peace, has a pile of money that Scrooge McDuck would drown in, and is still admired and beloved by millions, regardless of whether he doped...or not...
As for me, my opinions have been voiced on this little dirt road of the information superhighway on several occasions.
Do I think LA doped? Sure, but they ALL did. It was the era. Well, not really even the era! It's cycling. It's woven into the very fabric of the sport. It's been going on since cavemen invented the wheel, and raced to the buffalo herd to hunt dinner.
Do I feel cheated? Not by Lance or the others of the 90s/00s. The racing was brilliant! I've said it before, but it begs repeating. If you watched the Tour in this time period, and DID NOT jump up and down in front of your TV, shouting like someone in France could actually hear you, then I'll go ahead and call you out for being full of shit!
It's cool now to crap on Lance, Euro-Dogs, doping, etc., but 10-15 years ago, there was barely any room on the bandwagon. People say they LOVE cycling, but now the love seems to be conditional.
Who's the hypocrite now?
Oh, and by the way, Eddy Merckx got popped for doping...more than once. Look it up...
Unless Mr. Tygart produces a vial of Lance's blood, and it's bubbling in his hand, I will not speak of this again.

Hump Day
So you think your stem is slammed? Well, it ain't! Ryder's however...
Growing up as a child in Slovakia, Peter Sagan was on the track at an early age...
Oh yes...more hotness from Ritte...
Interesting ride last night. Felt bad...rode bad. Funny how that works. First ride with any sort of heat and humidity, and it showed. The wheels sort of came off near the airport. Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug.
Guessing that a chiro/ART adjustment, AND a massage in the same day had something to do with my complete lack of legs last night. Just felt noodly...
Oh well...it's just a bike ride. Beat the hell out of riding the couch...
And you should watch this...
Good interview with a good rider, a GREAT dude, and my friend...
And Schleck is out of Le Tour? Fractured pelvis? I'm getting light headed from all of the jokes swirling about...
How will he get on the top bunk?
Will Frank accept the position of 'little spoon'?
Getting into the footie PJs might be painful...
There are some NC17 ones running around too, but as this is a PG13 show...
Namaste...

Hello....Monday...
Ah...race organizers...
Nothing like putting a Band-Aid on a gaping wound...
The HotNess! Just about perfect. The white Deda stem would have to go in favor of a Thomson, but other than that...
And yes, I'd rock the pink all day...or least until I got tired of it...
It was a good weekend all the way around.
Nice little spin of The Iron Cross on Saturday with the regulars. No effort to do anything but turn the pedals over. Nice day + nice company + bike = good ride!
After the ride, The H.O. and I loaded up Junior Mgmt., and headed down to Santee State Park in...Santee. What a nice spot! It's a shame that more folks don't wander South Carolina. So many wonderful places to spend a day.
One of the myriad Limestone sinkholes throughout the park. This one is probably 20 feet deep. At the turnaround point of the "Sinkhole Loop" hiking trail, the hole has filled with water, and is the home of a momma alligator and her brood of 2-3 foot long progeny. Pretty damn cool to see!
Then we ate at the Lone Star BBQ and Mercantile. Not much I could eat, but very cool nonetheless. And they had live bluegrass going on....so there's that!
Tripped over this on the way home. Cool building, cool light!
Sunday, Il Prof and I met for a loop out through LexCo. I turned to come home with 2.5 hours. He stayed out for 3 or 4 more. It was cloudy, cool, and little drops of rain fell the entire ride...pretty nice!
I also figured out that the Silca Super Pista pump that I totally rebuilt has probably seen it's last days as the primary inflation device in Service Course. Saturday morning, I felt like I had a flat the whole ride. Upon checking pressure when I got home, the Vitts only had 100psi in them. The gauge on the SP is reading 20psi low. Dammit! I guess I'll try to figure something out. I feel guilty with the relegation to part-time duty, considering I've had it for almost 20 years...
And as Kate Upton says...
"It's a Wrap...!"
Nothing like putting a Band-Aid on a gaping wound...

Lucy @ BMC...
...you got some 'splaining to do...
Anybody got any ideas...
Di2 only...
Integral front brakes...
Integral rear brakes under the stays...
Hmmm.....
Edit : Word directly from the BMC Pro Dogs is that it's called the TMR01, and is a pre-production version. They say we'll know more "eventually"...

Mid-week
Man, I'm having trouble getting back in the swing...
Fortunately, the week hit it's halfway point today. The weather isn't helping! 65 and drizzle again this morning. Soul sucking...
At least the weather broke for long enough last night to get in a really good ride. Big group, some quick sections, and more than a few big laughs and smiles. A small Mexican almost brought the front group to grief, again, last night too.
On the downhill run on Glenn, TVH's nemesis dog decided it wanted to run out into the bunch. It was good for everyone involved that the little fella thought better of his endeavour, and stopped right ON the white line. Il Prof and I blew past him at 35mph.
I swear, I'm beginning to believe that TVH somehow caused Worldwide anger amongst chihuahuas when he rode over the one out in Eastover years ago. They have a hotline, much like the red phone, and alert one another when he's coming!
Time to do some shopping...
I need a new apron for the shop. Wonder if she'll let me have hers?
This is definitely coming my way today...
I need bar tape too, but couldn't find a picture that suited that need.
And a pic from last year's Tour. After watching a few days of Le Dauphine, it still works...
Namaste...

Some stuff...
Ah Florida...it would be for the best...
What's the bet Cav needs a step stool to get to his bin?
Yeah Andy, I wouldn't be happy about a hollow victory either. See also : Criterium du Dauphine 2012
I crashed, on the dirt, in the Giro. I don't care. I'm getting in the car!
The 404 message on Specialized's website. I dislike the Big S, and like Omega Pharma less, but this is pretty damn funny...
Back in the swing...and it's rained for two days. Karma for the idyllic rides and weather on ManCation? Seems so...
